Lecture Bas Heijne

05 february 2012, 14:00
Timmerfabriek (Out of Storage)

On February 5, 2011, essayist and writer Bas Heijne will give a lecture at Out of Storage in the Timmerfabriek.

In his lecture, Heijne will talk about the issues he first raised in his essays Moeten wij echt van elkaar houden? and Echt zien. According to him, the post-war humanist worldview has hopelessly faded, causing strong reactions throughout society. In politics, a rising populism emphasizes individuality and cultural affinity. Environmental policy is under pressure. And to the dismay of many, the broad support base for the arts is growing increasingly thin. Heijne says these reactions are not isolated; in his lecture, he outlines what the underlying motives might be and searches for possible answers.

Reservations can be made on the website of Out of Storage.

Please note the lecture will be in Dutch.

Valéry Proust Museum/White Cube Fever

From November 26, 2011 until Februari 5, 2012, the exhibition Valéry Proust Museum/White Cube Fever is presented at Mu.ZEE Oostende. This exhibition is curated by Camiel van Winkel and is the result of a collaboration between the Research Group of Visual Art at AKV|St. Joost, Marres Maastricht and Mu.ZEE Oostende.

The exhibition is not a regular group show or thematic exhibition, but an environment composed of selected works by a range of artists from different periods. Avoiding art historical and thematic selection criteria, the exhibition is based on the idea of the inevitable disappearance of the work of art in the empty spaces of the museum.

The title of the exhibition refers to Th.W. Adorno’s 1953 essay ‘Valéry Proust Museum’. Adorno bases his discussion of the problematic nature of the museum as an institution on texts by French authors Marcel Proust and Paul Valéry. In Valéry Proust Museum/White Cube Fever, Adorno’s analysis is extended to the contemporary situation. The exhibition can be seen as a plea for the ‘white cube’.

Between the artist who vacates the work, and the viewer who believes that the work must address someone else, a tangible gap opens up. Valéry Proust Museum/White Cube Fever exploits the emotional potential of this gap.
The exhibition includes work by Josef Albers, Lynda Benglis, Cosima von Bonin, Dirk Braeckman, Rodney Graham, Gerhard von Graevenitz, Arnoud Holleman, Dan Graham, and others.

The publication that accompanies the exhibition will be available in Marres.

The film Spectres by Sven Augustijnen

WIELS recently presented a new project by the Brussels-based artist Sven Augustijnen, which was an international co-production with a.o. Marres. The central work within this project is the film Spectres (104 min.). Augustijnen mainly came into focus with films in which he addresses the cultural specificity of places. His latest film is dedicated to the colonial history of Belgium. Augustijnen follows the French speaking Belgian Jacques Brassinne de La Buissière, who was a senior official at the time of the murder of the Congolese Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba over thirty years ago, and who investigated the murder himself.

The film Spectres is a co-production of CERA Partners in Art, Kunstenfestivaldesarts, WIELS (Brussels), Vlaams Nederlands Huis de Buren, KVS (Brussels), Mu.zee (Ostend), De Appel (Amsterdam), Marres (Maastricht), K9000 (Sankt Gallen), Kunsthalle Bern, FRAC Bourgogne (Dijon), Buda Kunstencentrum (Kortijk), FLACC (Genk).

The film is now presented as part of a solo exhibition of Augustijnen at the Appel in Amsterdam. In the context of this exhibition, the Appel is organizing a parallel program in cooperation with the Tropenmuseum, UvA and Marres. This parallel program includes amongst others a series of symposia that will take place in late January and early February of next year.

Spectres
will be screened in Maastricht in February 2012.

More Out of Storage!

The national and international press praise the alliance between art, design and industrial architecture. Out of Storage has also given an unintentional answer to the current economic crisis and the resulting stagnation in the development of the Belvédère area. The Timmerfabriek in Maastricht, the site of Out of Storage, is part of this major development project, which is currently subject to a fundamental reconsideration. The empty factory has found a valuable temporary use thanks to this project and is showing the potential of the site and the innovative partnerships that art institutions are able to have. In this particular case Marres Projects with FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, WOM Belvédère, the municipality of Maastricht, the province of Limburg and Maastricht VIA 2018.

The success of Out of Storage has been reason for the partners to give an extra impulse to the project. Under the title More Out of Storage, a new exhibition has been set up in the Timmerfabriek. A large number of new artworks have made their way from the FRAC in Dunkerque to Maastricht, amongst others works by Rirkit Tiravanija, Donald Judd, Angela de la Cruz, Panamerenko and Victor Burgin. A part of the design collection of the FRAC is also on show in the Timmerfabriek under the title Destrøy/Design. The new set-up is accompanied by both new and updated routes, with which the visitor can interpret the collection from the perspectives of diverse experts.

Destrøy/Design at Out of Storage

Just like Out of Storage, Destrøy/Design is based on the collection of FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais. Part of this traveling exhibition is now presented in the Timmerfabriek. The exhibition shows a number of iconic design pieces from the past decades. By presenting these objects within this temporary museum, the relationship between design and art is implicitly addressed. The industrial revolution and recent technological developments are partly responsible for a changing view on craftsmanship, tradition and the production proces, thereby also changing the position of the artist and the designer.

Marres Projects commissioned by Valkenburg

The unique approach of Marres Projects, namely contributing to policy development and product innovation through commissions from commercial companies and governmental agencies, is increasingly taking shape. Recently, Marres Projects received a commission by the advisory committee Area Development Maastricht Valkenburg. This advisory committee is looking for a vision on the area surrounding the Plenkertstraat in Valkenburg; a vision that connects the cultural facilities in the area with the restaurants and hotels. In the coming months, Marres Projects will collaborate with ten designers/architects that recently graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven and TU Delft to find a connecting factor.

On September 1st, the kick-off of this project took place in Valkenburg. Mr. Eurlings, mayor of Valkenburg, opened the convention. On 30 November the final design will be presented during a final symposium.

Marres Projects: Out of Storage

From June 25th 2011 onwards, the unique international exhibition Out of Storage will be presented in the beautifully renovated Timmerfabriek in Maastricht. Hundreds (!) of first-rate artworks from the collection of the French FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais move to Maastricht over the course of the project: works by Pawel Althamer, Superflex, Andy Warhol, Sol Lewitt, Vito Acconci, Christian Boltanski, Heidi Slimane, Barbara Visser, Claire Fontaine, Liam Gillick and many others. Most of these artworks have never been presented in the Netherlands. The scale of the building and the size of the collection also make it possible to present an image of a collecting and presenting institute such as FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais. A parallel program is organized in conjunction with Out of Storage , consisting of workshops, debates, lectures, performances and educational programs that address questions such as the mobility of collections and their accessibility.

Out of Storage is an initiative of Marres, FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais, the Municipality of Maastricht and Belvédère Development Group Maastricht and is supported by, amongst others, the Province of Limburg, fund SNS Reaal, fund VSB and the Elisabeth Strouven foundation.
