Marres in Between:
It Is All About Crafts

10 – 21 december 2008

Koninklijke Tichelaar in Makkum in co-operation with Studio Job, Alexander van Slobbe, Studio Makkink&Bey and JongeriusLab.

With the project focussing on the Flaneur, Marres completed her inquieries into the 19th century. As a preparation for the program of 2009 and the research into the great avant-gardes of the 20th century, Marres organizes two presentations. Both aspire to shed a new light on the current system of values within art and design, a state of affairs in which more than ever before the attention is directed at the tangible, physical, which attains its value from manual dexterity and a rich quality of materials.

It Is All About Crafts wants to broaden the discussion surrounding Damien Hirst to the domain of design with a presentation of the recently developed flowerpyramids by Koninklijke Tichelaar te Makkum.

With these exercizes in craft work, Tichelaar tries to generate attention for the local and the productive force of tradition in order to connect these questions to a quest for a new language of forms.

Accompanying the two presentations Marres published an essay written by Louise Schouwenberg and Guus Beumer, titled In een wereld van Teveel is Teveel hetzelfde.

In een Wereld van Teveel, is Teveel Hetzelfde

A glimpse of the dynamics within a collecting art institute
Consumerist excess and the fiction of economic speculation
Create or destroy
Health as common good and social capital
How to deal with this new reality?
is the idea of a school still grounded in the locality of a physical environment?
The ultimate symbol of godlessness
Trust me - I'm a designer
We'll be rich tonight!
Without a palace of glass, life is a burden
