the Avantgarde:
Specters of the Nineties
12 november 2011
Artist: Hinrich Sachs
Within the framework of the exhibition Specters of the Nineties, Marres presents the event That We Know ('Wat men weet'), a work by German artist Hinrich Sachs.
Since its first manifestation at Transmission Gallery in Glasgow in 1994, That We Know has been realized in different international contexts – subsequently in Montpellier, Bremen (both 1995), Taipei (1998), and Istanbul (2011) – and will now open a new chapter in... Maastricht.
For the event, guests from different professional backgrounds improvise a debate in relation to a complete set of the international editions of ELLE magazine. Franchised around the world, the issue of ELLE on display at Marres appears in its 30 different regional editions, all published in the month of September 2011.
A slightly moderated event, That We Know promises a debate about the dynamics of globalization, touching on more specific topics such as the present state of magazines, of fashion, of representations of the female, and of the editorial concept as a cultural product. Invited guests shape and specify the general outlines of the event. Partaking in the debate at Marres are curators Leontine Coelewij, conservator of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and Valerie Smith, head of the department art, film and media of Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin. Both were involved in seminal exhibition projects in the 1990s. Amongst the various exhibitions Coelewij curated in that decade include Parler Femme (1991) and Behave! (1996). Valerie Smith is best known as curator of Sonsbeek 93. Also partaking in the debate is Vela Arbutina, co-editor and designer of Girls Like Us, an international independent magazine representing a contemporary community of women.
