The Lobby

11 november 2006

Artists: André van Bergen and Michiel Kluiters

Permanent installation by André van Bergen and Michiel Kluiters

Marres owes a lot to the atmosphere reverberant in the several houses in which it is located. Without the specific division, the historical elements and the bizarre transitions between the three houses, we would never have been able to develop the current program around the positions of the dandy, the collector and the dilettant. The characteristics of this house gave rise to the question whether we should place the idea of the house and its different possibilities central in the development of our exhibitionmodels and the way we position ourselves towards our visitors. This in turn led to the question whether it would be interesting to confront an artist directly with our ambition to formulate new expectations and demands of the house time and again. This question was posed to artists André van Bergen and Michiel Kluiters. We envision the attic of Marres as a place to work, present, eat and sleep and this is why it can give Marres the ideal of hospitality. In the course of history, this floor already served the purpose of storage room, nursery, classroom, exhibitionroom and 'artist-in-residence'. On saturday, November 11th 2006, the final result titled Lobby was opened. This permanent installation by Kluiters and Van Bergen seems to simply mock our desires without filling any other definitive function. Lobby is first of all a spatial and physical experience and the installation most importantly points back to the house and its endless potentiality, On the other hand, surprisingly, Lobby answers to the desire of not only having the opportunity to be a visitor or creator in Marres, but first of all to be its guest.
